about
Moongazer!- A force of nature, mixing traditional music with contemporary influences to produce a firestorm of music best experienced live.

Formed in 2007 by ex session musician Nigel Davies, Moongazer quickly established a reputation for energetic live performances and early into their career supported Glastonbury legends Stackridge. Other high profile support slots followed including gigs with Terrafolk and the Strawbs as well as festival slots with The Storys, Amy Wadge and Cerys Matthews.

"Moongazer...reminiscent of Dylan in his Desire period"-review of Stackridge/Moongazer concert March 7th 2008.

After a blistering performance at the Pontardawe International Music Festival, Moongazer have become firm favourites at festivals throughout the country.

“Influences including the Pogues and the Waterboys could clearly be heard as with Fiddle flying, the band upped the ante for bands everywhere.

“Blue Scar is a classic in the making.” Feedback Magazine

"Moongazer...reminiscent of Dylan in his Desire period"-review of Stackridge/Moongazer concert March 7th 2008.

The band members are vastly experienced musicians and include Welsh Fiddle Champion, Jamie Nemeth, who is quickly gaining a strong reputation among aficionados of Folk and roots music.

In Spring 2008, Moongazer signed to Rockbox Productions and in Autumn 2008, released their first CD “Hares and Graces” to very favourable reviews. The band is at it’s best in the live arena however and any chance to catch them on a stage near you should not be missed.

Track Name: Blue Scar
Blue Scar

I left school at fourteen
My adulthood begun
They sent me down the dusty mines
Just like my daddy done
I went into the dirty pits
A life of molten black
A seam of coal beneath my knees

The world upon my back.
Half a mile I’d have to crawl
To cut that coal each day
From early in the morning
Til late I’d have to stay
I never knew the morning sun.
It’s warmth upon my face
Cos night-time’d come around again
Before I left that place.

A ton or more I’d cut each day
On my hands and knees
The smallest cog in what they call
The world economy
They’d burn my coal in factories
to give the world it’s light
a gift to those above the ground from those in constant night.

I lost so many friends down there
Lost beneath the earth
I still remember all their names
I still know what they’re worth
The laughter and the last goodbye
The friendship and the fear
The tracks of sadness on a cheek
Left by a miner’s tear.

Now they’re closing down the mine
They say they’ve had their day
They buy the their coal from distant parts
It’s dug for far less pay.
They I’ll soon forget those days
I know that just ain’t true
A film of dust inside my lungs
The scars of vivid blue

One day I’ll go to heaven
I’ll leave my pick behind
And I’ll ask that old St Peter
Perhaps he’d be so kind
To find me work above the ground
You know that would be swell
You see I think I’ve had my share
Of working down in hell.
Track Name: Down to the River
Down to the River

See the man in the pinstripe suit like a statue in the street,
Briefcase and papers, strewn around his feet.
He said I thought I was winning this rat race
But it sure feels like defeat

Deep behind the curtains, she sits in the dark alone.
She never answers the doorbell, she never answers the phone
Too long building a palace
when she should have been building a home

Chorus:
So take him down to the river
And set his spirit free.
Goin’ to wash his pride in the rising tide
Goin’ to stop that self-deceit.
Take him down to the ocean
Goin’ wash away his pain
If he only dares I know somewhere
He could find that child again, child again

Softly spoken soldier, living by the gun
All he wanted was adventure and he dreamed about was fun
Now has trouble sleeping
When he dreams of what he’s done.

Preening politician, practising his lies.
He once knew a good man whom he constantly denies
But sometimes in the mirror
He’s there behind the eyes

Chorus

Save me from this trouble, take me from this town
Tell them in the circus they’re going to need another clown
I thought I was climbing mountains
But I was just running ‘round and ‘round

Chorus
Track Name: Moongazer
Mulberry wine easing me senses
As I look to the West as the sun slips away
Night steals in slowly like a secretive lover
Cooling the cares that burn though the day

Shadows fall, the woodlands echoing
The moorland is silvered beaten and worn
Proud in her majesty, long in her ancestry
The moon is assuming her realm till the dawn

Look how the moongazer stares at the sky
Lost in his madness and no-one knows why

Nighthawks soar, the owl in her forest halls
The undergrowth kingdom is coming alive
Shooting stars passing infinity
Far flung firmaments burn in the sky

Look how the moongazer stares at the sky
Lost in his madness and no-one knows why

Evening breeze moving the grass in waves
Shaking the leaves on the trees with a sigh
The moon governs all, the winds and the passing tides
In an eternal pattern that never will die
Track Name: Seasons
Seasons

You came to me in springtime,
the sunshine in your hair
And all was new that came with you
And hope was everywhere

You brought me faith and laughter.
You brought me calm and peace
You gave to me a better life
You gave me my release.

How quickly changed the seasons
How fast the flight of time
I took so much for granted when I thought that you were mine

You cooled me in the Summer
I rested in your shade
As hazy months rolled into one
The love within you strayed

How quickly changed the seasons
How fast the flight of time
I took so much for granted when I thought that you were mine
I lost you in the Autumn
Life summers fading green
My pride before a fall that I know I should have seen

Winter came too early
The cold cut to the bone
As icy winds blew over me
As I waited here alone

The weeks turned into seasons
The seasons into years
But winter never changed to spring
Now you’re no longer here
Track Name: Pirates
PIRATES
We cut our sails for the open sea
With a rising tide and a wayward lea
With stiffening breeze coming close behind
Whipping flecks of foam off the dappled brine
As Kingston town slips away from view
Below the ocean drowned in blue-away

The canvas billowed the sheets were tight
We ploughed the waves through day and night
With spirits high and faces bright
crossing the ocean in headlong flight
the compass straight, the quarry known
the grin is wide on a skull and bones

There’s Devon Sam from Plymouth sound
Who lost an eye to a musket round
And parson Pete with his bible verse
A cutlass sharp and a seaman’s curse.
Up above is wide eyed jack
Who scours the sea for the first attack away

There’s mad dog smith from Carlyon bay
Who came to sea on navy pay
Six foot six and as wide as they come
He lost his wits when he took to rum
He killed a man in a tavern brawl
Chose a pirates life to a hangman’s fall

For good queen Bess, we ply our trade
Every cannon round, every boarding raid
She names the song and we play the tune
And the Spaniards dance from the masts at noon.
There’s many a wreck on the ocean bed
a resting place of King Philips dead

Four days out on the Spanish Maine
On a Spanish barque our cannon were trained
They turned sharp to port and made to run
So we let loose with our starboard guns
The grapeshot fell like leaden rain
And we took the gold of the king of Spain

There’ll never be a better career
than one of her majesty’s privateers
no-one knows the course we steer
there’s no man in the world who’s freer
we fight and steal and kill and borrow
live today, damn tomorrow.
We’ve many shipmates and death is one
We give no quarter and expect none
We live for glory or the hangman’s rope
To live today our only hope
Horizons are our only bonds
So set the sails we’ll sail beyond

AIM LOW LET THE BROADSIDE GO
WE’LL SINK THE BASTARDS WITH ANOTHER BLOW
HIT THE WATERLINE AND DOWN BELOW
HEY HO AND DOWN SHE GOES
Track Name: Smoke Rings
Smoke rings

Just another crazy evening
Blowing smoke-rings from the edge
Drifting through this eggshell landscape
Trying to read the patterns in you head
When will realise, you simply can’t disguise
The feeling deep within your heart
You know you just can’t hide Behind your stupid pride
You’ll only tear your fragile world apart.

Another lonely day in heaven
The shadow casts a shadow on your smile
Passing time with passing strangers
And maybe you’ll find friendship for a while
We’re coming to the end
My poor forsaken friend
I stretch a hand to you but you say you’re fine
When did this all begin
The slow relentless spin
Why did you have to go and cross that line?

CHORUS:
Do you know what you want?
You’re all back to front.
You say you’re going to stay
Then you walk away.
Do you know who you are?
My misguided star
You say you’re on the up
But I know you’re down.

There’s a castle on a mountain
A million miles or so from here
Where a princess keeps her treasure
Inside a single diamond coated tear.
When will realise, you simply can’t disguise
The feeling deep within your heart
You know you just can’t hide
Behind your stupid pride
You’ll tear your fragile world apart.

CHORUS
Track Name: Heartflight
Heartflight

So long ago and far away
And still I feel you near me
At break of day as night time strays
I see your face so clearly
Your perfume floats in the morning breeze
Your whispering voice in the air
I hear you calling
I feel I’m falling beneath that sweet memory

Chorus
Sometimes my dreams like autumn leaves
come sailing to the ground
and all my faith dissolves in space
and I lose my way once more
How slowly creeps the evening
How long the tired night
I think of you and then my heart takes flight

We lost our way
Our plans betrayed
Why did I ever lose you
A careless word
A thoughtless deed
I didn’t mean to hurt you
My mind reels back and I see the day
As clearly now as before
My world stopped turning
My arms still yearning
To hold you close once again

Chorus

how deep this pool of longing
how hard the daily fight
I think of you and then my heart takes flight

Deep in the heart of me
I feel you’re a part of me
You’re with me the rest of my days

Chorus

How slowly creeps the evening
How long the tired night
I think of you and then my heart takes flight
Track Name: Am I a Hawk?
Am I a Hawk?

Am I a hawk?
How many times must I tell you I can't fly?
But I can walk
To bathe the blisters on the souls
Of my feet in the sea.

Can we talk?
How many times must I tell you I won't lie?
And when we talk
Let's reach the truth as it is told
For the likes of you and me.
News gets around by word of mouth.
I won't let myself be led.
East, West, North, South.
It's better left unsaid.
A wheel of pointless maybes
Turns inside my head.

The road is forked.
How many times must I tell you I will try
To mark with chalk
The ways that you have marked with coal
Just to prove that we are free?
Cold sand between my toes,
The wind across my face
I know I'm able to remember
How to forget the things I learn
As I gaze out to the sea
I know I can't return
Cos news gets round by word of mouth
I won't let myself be led
East, West, North, South
It's better left unsaid.
A wheel of pointless maybes
Turns inside my head.

Am I a hawk?
How many times must I tell you I can't fly?
But I can walk
To bathe the blisters on the souls
Of my feet in the sea.
Track Name: A Cruel Twist of Fate
A Cruel Twist of Fate

He stands up on the rooftop
The cruel world below
He wonders how it ever came to this
Now that she has left him
he knows he can’t go on
Hell has come from what had seemed such bliss
But far away she knows she truly loves him
But he hears the phone start ringing just too late
And falling through the air
He knows this just aint fair
It’s just another cruel twist of fate

On the field of Flanders
A million poppies grow
From seeds of youth scattered in the mud
All those lost tomorrows
All those mothers sons
Lost beneath a crimson tide of blood
And old men try to justify their honour
With lives of the young the price they bravely pay
And after much debate
We’ll all be friendly states
Its just another cruel twist of fate

Hear the world spinning slowly
See the clock running wild
Like puppets in a rage
Our strings are not quite straight
Tangled in a cruel twist of fate

Oh tell me Mr President
In whom we place our trust
Do you think democracy still works
If you’re the chosen guardian
The nations favourite son
Why is it that you are such a jerk
Your finger on the button every morning
A little man so full of fear and hate
As mushroom clouds climb high
Into a blood red sky
We vanish in a cruel twist of fate
Track Name: Halcyon
Halcyon

Like Velvet haze, the halcyon days come back to haunt me now
Upon the beach, beyond the reach of those I used to know
You call my name but all in vain
The ocean’s roar, the closing door
The distant ghosts are waving to me now.

To break the bonds, to right the wrongs that live like yesterday
The threshold crossed, a penny tossed, the ferryman to pay.
No turning now, the seal is rent
The beast is loose, the bars are bent
The glass reflection pierces your mind

The dancing all is done
The count returns to one
The circling eagle swoops to claim its prey
As waves crash to the shore
The crowd cries out for more
The trumpets sound to mark the end of days

From shadow halls, the spectre calls upon the evening breeze
The mirror cracks, all shades of black come flooding like a dream
The drapes are torn, the ashes cold
The pages ripped, the tale retold
The curtains raised, the play begins again.

The dancers fade in light
The eagle soars in flight
The numbers rise the count begins again
The tide again is turned
The crowds demands are spurned
The trumpets fade beyond of end days
